Watercolor demo of iconic boats in Kennebunkport

Kris Occhino demonstrated her watercolor techniques by painting the 3 iconic boats in Kennebunkport, a subject many artists are familiar with. Over the years, she has painted them in a variety of configurations. She asked if we would prefer a nocturnal interpretation or daytime as shown in her photo reference. The majority of our audience were in favor of the photo reference. Kris worked on 300 lb. watercolor paper, which she had prepared ahead of time with her drawing and masking fluid. Kris uses Pebeo Drawing Gum for masking fluid and recommends Pebeo’s Marker Masking Fluid for thin lines. Kris uses a Quiller Palette and has a large assortment of brushes, some of which she has had since college in the 1970’s.

Kris began by wetting the paper in the areas she wanted to work on using a wet in wet technique. She progressed from light to dark building up the reflections in the water and keeping the opposite shore fairly abstract. The boats and the float were the focal point and she brought the composition to life as she added detail and reds to that area.

Monica Phillips Young was the lucky winner of the raffle!
