NORWOOD—Brad Allen and Kristin Capezio wrapped up a successful artists’ reception on Sunday, August 4, 2019. The two create art through very different mediums but their styles and approaches to art reflect striking similarities. Both are inclined to appreciate the social aspects of art, particularly the way in which it helps integrate artists into theirs communities and connects people with experiences.

Among the attendees were Norwood Art Association members and volunteers, NAA board members and fellow Norwood Fine Arts Gallery & Studio artists. Allen is an anchor artist and Capezio is a guest artist at the gallery. The reception fostered opportunities for rich conversations about art production, evaluation and pricing. Allen made several sales that afternoon and Capezio remarked on the number of important bridges being built within the art community to her work with urban youth in a high poverty, high crime neighborhood in Boston.

“The prospects of bringing new creative arts to my students were among the best outcomes of this event,” Capezio stated, “Art is a formidable outlet for a vast range of emotions and experiences. It would be in our program’s interest to invest in developing an art therapy initiative that provided more students with an outlet for the trauma they experienced or are experiencing.”

Capezio works as the Academic Director for immigrant families at a 501(c)3 in Roslindale, MA. The Immigrant Family Services Institute (IFSI) drives attention and resources toward a vulnerable population of children and adults. A large percentage of IFSI’s  families fall under Temporary Protective Status (TPS) in the US and grapple with daily uncertainty about their housing and residency.

“To cultivate stronger relationships with art and art production, and to facilitate connections with local artists, for our students, is a priority close to the top of my list in the new school year,” Capezio noted.

Artists interested in hosting receptions at the gallery should contact Ellen Little at beslittle@aol.com.

The Norwood Art Association’s program of monthly art demonstrations is supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
